Sanctuary

Sanctuary

Series Summary: Sanctuary follows the exploits of Dr. Helen Magnus (Amanda Tapping) as she seeks out all manner of terrifying and monstrous creatures (known as ‘Abnormals’), some of which are human. Some of these creatures she needs to lock up to protect the public and some of them she needs to protect from the public. She is aided in her quest by her reluctant protégé Will Zimmerman (Robin Dunne); her intrepid, if somewhat reckless, daughter Ashley (Emilie Ullerup); the talkative geek Henry Foss (Ryan Robbins), a computer and security expert; and Bigfoot (Christopher Heyerdahl), her taciturn Neanderthal-like assistant.

Amanda’s Role: Helen was one of the first female doctors and scientists of the Royal College of Surgeons and was born some time in the Victorian Era. Helen was introduced to her father’s “private research”, that of studying and helping “abnormals”. With time, she became a proficient medical and scientific researcher, and eventually Gregory introduced her to other scientists and paranormal researchers interested in the same field. This group was named; “The Five”. Helen eventually discovered that, if injected with a pure form of vampire blood; any human could become an abnormal and gain abilities. Each member received unique abilities; with Helen gaining a more advanced form of longevity that has left her unable to die of natural causes or physically age. At this time, Helen pursued a relationship with John Druitt; a fellow Five member, but his reaction to his abilities eventually drove him to become a serial killer and so was driven away, but not before the two conceived a child; Ashley. Afterwards, Helen, using her father’s designs, constructed and crafted the “Sanctuary For All”; a series of facilities around the world designed for the purpose of safe refuge or secure confinement for abnormals; with the U.S. Sanctuary in New York City serving as headquarters. Helen devoted her life to both hunting and protecting the so-called “monsters”.
